chapter eleven

By the time Ethan drove into his town-house complex, evening was turning to dusk. He pulled into a parking space. He and Sandy got out of the car, and he circled around to the passenger side.

“Ethan? Do you suppose that man we saw last night getting into the car in front of Laura’s house was Vince Mulroney?”

“I don’t know. It was a rental car, and if he’d flown here from Austin, he could very well have been driving one. Do you remember if the guy we saw had dark hair?”

“Looked like it to me. But it was dark outside.”

“As soon as the police get him in custody, we can tell them what we saw and give them the license plate number.”

Sandy nodded.

“I’ll talk to Henderson tomorrow,” Ethan said. “I’ll call you as soon as I know what’s up.”

“Just how big a long shot do you think this is?”

“I don’t know. First I’ve got to convince Henderson to look for the tape. Then they’ve got to find it. I think we both know that in all likelihood, Chris will still end up having to talk to the police.”

“But if she does, you’ll be helping with her custody battle. You’ll help her keep her daughter.” Sandy smiled. “That was a good thing to do.”

“It was just negotiation. I wanted something from her, so I had to give up something.”

“I think it was more than that.”

“Sandy, as much as I’d like to delude you into thinking I’m edging into sainthood, the truth is that you merely convinced me that my strategy was flawed. I changed the battle plan. That’s all.”

“And how about the family-law attorney at your firm whose time you so graciously offered for peanuts? Is he also fighting this battle?”

“I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.”

“If you keep giving your services away, you’re going to end up in the poorhouse.”

He gave her an offhand shrug. “Town-house living is overrated.”

She smiled when he said that, and he wondered at what point in time he’d become such a pushover. He still didn’t like this situation. It was a crazy, dead-end path to follow. He was going to have to convince a pain-in-the-ass detective to reopen a crime scene to search for a tape that might or might not be there. If it was, and they were very, very lucky, it might hold evidence that would allow them to nail a killer.

And it might not.

But for now, it didn’t hurt to talk to Henderson. If they didn’t find the tape, he could always fall back on Chris’s testimony. If they did, maybe it could be a win-win situation after all.

“I guess I’d better be going,” Sandy said.

As she turned to unlock her car door, Ethan heard a noise behind him. He turned to see a little blond girl knocking on the door to his town house.

“Looks like she’s selling something,” Sandy said waving at the kid. “Over here, sweetie!”

The girl turned. Sandy motioned to her, and she tentatively walked over to them.
